THE DIRTY WORLD OF INDIAN POLITICS
I have followed Indian politics from my student days.
During the 50's & 60s I thought ,our politics was clean and above criticism.
It started to get dirty from the 70's;
Old timers will remember the slogan "Aye Raam Gaye Raam".
It meant 'he came & went' ; what it really meant was _
A legislator joined the party in power[after receiving payment] to pass or oppose a bill in the Lok Sabha and having done so went back to his own party.
This was so frequent ,even in the States, that the govt came with the " Anti Defection Bill " to prevent the menace.
Later on there was the infamous Harshad Mehta case in the 80s when a suit case full of notes was offered to a group of legislators when they threatened to leave the ruling party just when it needed their support.
Then during the U P A 1 Government, one will not forget those three legislators, who marched into the Lok Sabha armed with suit cases of cash and emptied it inside the house premises saying they were offered bribes to support the government to pass the Nuclear Bill.
The recent elections in Maharashtra and Haryana ,once again showed our politics at its worst.
A prisoner in jail managed to come out on medical grounds, only to canvas for his party !
Two sets of parties in alliance broke up as they did not agree on sharing of seats.
Each abused the other three in the choicest terms, during canvassing; after the results, everything was forgotten as the losers made friendly overtures to the winner, as the winner had promised the the electorate , that he will expose their misdeeds, once the government is formed.
Since the rulers indulge in corruption , the disease has percolated down...
So much so that we see it in operation in the local offices, all over the country. even the auto driver needs his pie now from the common man !
Venkatesh
